What to expect when visiting Hoi An
Hoi An is a charming city on Vietnam’s central coast. Once a major port, the mixed influences of Japanese, Chinese, and European merchants are still visible here.
Its Old Town is a well-preserved fusion of foreign and indigenous architecture, laid out in a small-scale model of a 15th to 19th-century trading hub. No wonder it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site! Travelling to Hoi An feels like walking back in time.

*COVID-19 UPDATE: Pre-pandemic, there used to be direct buses operating from Nha Trang to Hoi An. But the last time we checked (February 2023), you can only take the bus from Nha Trang to Da Nang and then transfer to another bus bound for Hoi An. Check BookAway to see if anything has changed.
When taking the bus from Nha Trang to Hoi An, you can save on accommodation costs because the buses travel overnight.
Buses are not as safe as trains, though. And for this route, the main bus operators get mixed reviews — there’s a chance you’ll get an unpleasant ride.
Step 1: Nha Trang to Da Nang by Bus
You can choose from a few bus companies from Nha Trang to Da Nang. These include Lien Hung, Ha Linh, Quang Hanh, and Cuc Tung Limousine.
Be aware that these operators don’t exactly get the best reviews. Considering it’s a 10h 30m - 10h 45m bus journey, you don’t want to get stuck in a possibly uncomfortable bus with rude staff. For a better experience, we recommend taking the train instead.
Do you still want to take the bus? Fares start from 377,000 VND ($15.20).
Buses depart from Nha Trang Central Bus Station, 7 km west of the main beach. From the city centre, you can get there by taxi for around 150,000 VND ($6).
All buses arrive at Da Nang Central Bus Station.
Step 2: Da Nang to Hoi An by Taxi
From Da Nang Bus Station, the most convenient way to get to Hoi An is by taxi. Fares start from 440,000 VND ($17.70) when you book through BookAway, which offers comfortable cars with trusted drivers.

IMPORTANT: Public Bus #1, which used to operate direct trips from Da Nang to Hoi An, was not available anymore the last time we checked (February 2023). Some travellers who did not know this have been lured into taking overpriced taxis. This is why it’s best to pre-book your private transfer with a company you already trust.

You can also get a cheaper bunk in a 6-berth sleeper, but it may not be as spacious or as comfortable. Soft seats are also available, but impractical for this route.

Its 509 km not 625. I inow I cycled it kol
Hi Simon, thank you for pointing that out! Just edited the post. Rounded it off a bit but it’s much closer to the correct numbers now! How was it though? Must have been a very beautiful ride!
What a great article! Im searching for the train from Nha Trang to Da Nang now, but soft berth will cost me 60 US Dollars? Thats a totally different price. What am i doing wrong?
Thanks! Glad you find the post useful! 60USD is indeed double the price that it should cost. Did you use the link I provided to book with Baolau? Other booking websites are often more expensive. When I search on Baolau for tomorrow (24-06) I noticed that the tickets are sold out. But you can still buy tickets for the prices mentioned for wednesday (25-06) or later. The cheapest sleeper berth from Nha Trang to Dang is the SE22 and costs 731.000VND ($31.50).
