How to get from Colombo to Dickwella

There are 3 ways to travel the 210 kilometers (130 miles) from Colombo to Dickwella. You can choose between the bus, taxi and train. The journey takes 3 hours to 3 hours 55 minutes and the quickest way is by taxi. If you're on a budget, the cheapest option is by bus with tickets starting at 420 LKR (€1.30).

De enige rechtstreekse bussen van Colombo naar Dickwella zijn bussen zonder airconditioning. Normaal gesproken zouden deze erg oncomfortabel zijn in Sri Lanka. Maar de bussen rijden langs de westkust, dus je kunt genieten van de zeebries uit het open raam.

From Bastian Mawatha Bus Stand, take a bus bound for Kataragama (#3) or Tangalle (#32-4). Make sure to pick the semi-luxury bus as they make fewer stops compared to the normal bus. Fares start at 420 LKR (€1.30). Ask your driver to drop you off at Dickwella.

Als je het niet prettig vindt om een bus zonder airconditioning te nemen, is er ook een optie om met een toeristenbus van Colombo naar Matara te reizen. Vervolgens kun je overstappen op een taxi die je rechtstreeks naar Dickwella brengt.

Disaru Expressway departs daily from Bastian Mawatha Bus Station at 11:00 and arrives at 14:00 in Matara Bus Stand. A ticket costs 2,360 LKR (€7.30) and the bus journey takes 3 hours. From here, Dickwella is 30mins away by taxi. Taxi fares start at 1,270 LKR (€3.90).

Dickwella heeft geen eigen treinstation, dus je kunt het beste een rechtstreekse trein naar Matara nemen. Een ander station dat dichter bij Dickwella ligt is Wewurukannala. Dit station ligt op slechts 10 minuten rijden van Dickwella en maakt deel uit van de spoorlijn tussen Matara en Beliatta, maar helaas rijdt de vertrek- en aankomsttijden erg onregelmatig.

Op de een of andere manier nam ik uiteindelijk deze trein vanuit Colombo omdat mijn oorspronkelijke trein was geannuleerd. Deze reis is echter geen aanrader. De reis kostte me bijna het dubbele aan tijd, de wachttijd op het station van Colombo niet meegerekend!

Daarom raden we je aan een rechtstreekse trein naar Matara te nemen en dan verder te gaan met de taxi of bus naar Dickwella. Of als je je geluk wilt beproeven, vraag dan om de trein naar Wewurukannala (veel succes met het uitspreken daarvan) en wie weet vertrekt die wel snel nadat je bent aangekomen.

When booking online, only 1st class train tickets are available from Colombo Fort to Matara Railway Station. A ticket costs 3,450 LKR (€10.70) and the journey takes at least 2h 35m - 3h 25m.

From Matara Railway Station, Dickwella is about 20 km away. The easiest way to reach it is by taxi, which takes about 30 minutes and costs around 1,500 LKR (€4.70).

Een goedkopere optie is om met de bus te reizen. Matara Bus Stand is echter nog steeds 1,5 km verwijderd van het treinstation. Het is 5-10 minuten per taxi of tuk-tuk en 20 minuten te voet. Vanaf Neem bij Matara Bus Stand een bus naar Dickwella.

De laatste optie is om de trein naar Wewurukannala te nemen, maar zoals we al beschreven hebben is de kans erg klein dat dat overeenkomt met je vertrek- en aankomsttijden.

From Colombo to Dickwella, you can book a taxi via Uber for around 9,100 LKR (€28), but fares can be slightly cheaper or more expensive depending on availability. Hoping for cheaper rates? You can also check the taxi apps PickMe and TaxiGo. But note that although these are widely available in Colombo, they are not easy to book for longer journeys.
