Not a fan of taking a 13-hour bus ride? Totally understandable, but the only alternative isn’t that much better. This other option includes a 1-hour bus to Tuxtla Gutierrez for 250 MXN ($12) and from there a 5-hour indirect flight to Puerto Escondido with rates from 1,770 MXN ($85).
We don’t recommend flying from San Cristobal to Puerto Escondido
As there are no direct flights from Tuxtla Gutierrez to Puerto Escondido, you will have to make a stopover in Mexico City which is way off the path. The cost is basically double that of a bus fare and including the layover (at least 2.5 hours), you will be switching vehicles twice. Not exactly a comfortable journey.
It’s also worth noting that buses from San Cristobal de las Casas to Tuxtla Gutierrez Airport don’t run often so they may not fit your flight schedule. There’s a chance you’ll have to wait a couple of hours at the airport before your flight or end up taking a taxi, which will increase the cost even more.
If despite all these, you choose to travel by flight consider including a carbon compensation fee to reduce your impact on the environment.
Buses operating from San Cristobal de las Casas to Puerto Escondido depart in the afternoon and evening, meaning most of the journey will be at night. You can save in both day time and a night on accommodation.
OCC, a sub-branch of Mexico’s leading bus company ADO, is the lone operator for this route. Their buses come equipped with AC, reclining seats and a toilet.
You can expect for your bus to make a few stops for food and bathroom breaks. We recommend making good use of these stops to stretch your legs as well. To help make the journey more enjoyable, make sure to bring some snacks, a good playlist, and a few downloaded Netflix movies.
Hopefully, you’ll be able to catch some sleep during the 13-hour journey.
