The best way to travel the 619 km (384 miles) from San Cristobal to Puerto Escondido is a 13-hour bus ride, which costs around 992 MXN ($50). An alternative option, although not recommended, is to take a 6-hour indirect flight + bus via Tuxtla Gutierrez with combined rates from 2,020 MXN ($100).

Buses are the most reliable and direct option to travel between San Cristobal de las Casas and Puerto Escondido. There are 4 departures every day and you can expect comfortable buses with reliable drivers.

Not a fan of taking a 13-hour bus ride? Totally understandable, but the only alternative isn’t that much better. This other option includes a 1-hour bus to Tuxtla Gutierrez for 250 MXN ($12.50) and from there a 5-hour indirect flight to Puerto Escondido with rates from 1,770 MXN ($90).

We don’t recommend flying from San Cristobal to Puerto Escondido

As there are no direct flights from Tuxtla Gutierrez to Puerto Escondido, you will have to make a stopover in Mexico City which is way off the path. The cost is basically double that of a bus fare and including the layover (at least 2.5 hours), you will be switching vehicles twice. Not exactly a comfortable journey.

It’s also worth noting that buses from San Cristobal de las Casas to Tuxtla Gutierrez Airport don’t run often so they may not fit your flight schedule. There’s a chance you’ll have to wait a couple of hours at the airport before your flight or end up taking a taxi, which will increase the cost even more.

If despite all these, you choose to travel by flight consider including a carbon compensation fee to reduce your impact on the environment.

You can expect for your bus to make a few stops for food and bathroom breaks. We recommend making good use of these stops to stretch your legs as well. To help make the journey more enjoyable, make sure to bring some snacks, a good playlist, and a few downloaded Netflix movies.

Hopefully, you’ll be able to catch some sleep during the 13-hour journey.
