Hoi An does not have its own railway station. That’s why you need to book a train from Nha Trang to DaNang. When you arrive at DaNang railway station, you can take a local bus or shuttle bus to Hoi An.
we recommend to book the night train, so you don’t lose a day on traveling. and you can also get a good sleep in the night train.
Bus from Nha Trang to Hoi An
10,5 hours, 250.000 VND (€10)
If you are on a strict budget the bus might be better for you. But keep in mind that traveling by bus is not the safest option in Vietnam. If you decide to travel by bus we recommend to take the night bus, since it will be a long 10 hour during the journey.
Flight from Nha Trang to Hoi An
3 hours, 536.900 VND (€20,50)
Flying is the fastest option, but also consider you need to be 2 hours in advance at the airport. Considering that you can only fly during the day, the night train or bus might even save you time.
If you don’t want to travel by night then flying is the best way to go.
Option 1: Train + Bus
Route: Nha Trang Da Nang Hoi An
Duration: 11 hours
Costs: 641.000 VND (€25)
First, take the train from Nha Trang to DaNang railway station. From Da Nang railway station to Hoi An center takes a bit about 45 minutes.
From Nha Trang city center to the railway station is just a 15-10 min walk or a short taxi ride.
Train: Nha Trang Da Nang
Duration: 10h 15min
Costs: 621.000 VND (€24)
There are daily 8 trains leaving from Nha Trang to DaNang, but we only recommend to book the night train. This leaves you with one of the options below:

Bus: Da Nang Railway Station Hoi An
Costs: 20.000 VND (€0,80)
From DaNang railway station to Hoi An center takes 45min by public bus. The buses are waiting just outside the railway station. You can also take a taxi or shuttle bus if you want to arrive closer to your destination.

Option 2: Bus
Route: Nha Trang Hoi An
Duration: 10,5 hours
Costs: 250.000 VND (€10)
Taking the night bus is easy and also a cheap way of traveling, but not as safe as the trains.
Buses depart in the center of Nha Trang and also drop you off in the center of Hoi An. The bus takes about the same time as the train from Nha Trang to Hoi An. But, with the bus, you don’t have to transfer from DaNang to Hoi An city center.
Still, keep in mind that 10 hours of traveling by bus is exhausting and sleeping in the night train is much more convenient and safer.

The above bus companies leave from Nha Trang center and drop you off at Hoi An center.
Another company on this route is Futa bus, but since their reputation is not that good we recommend to book a bus with Hanh Cafe or Sinh tourist bus instead.
Option 3: Plane
Route: Nha Trang Da Nang Hoi An
Duration: 3 hours
Costs: 536.900 VND (€20,50)
The closest airport to Nha Trang is Cam Ranh, which takes about one hour by bus from the city center.

Things to do in Hoi An
Unfortanetely, I don't have a list of things to do yet. But, at least I can recommend you a good website.
The online activity platform Klook offers many tours in Hoi An at great prices. I used it now for a couple of times and had great experiences. And the prices are often even lower than when you book with a local travel agent!
And most important, by booking the activity in advance, you avoid the problem of fully booked tours.
