Pakse to Don Det by Combined Bus + Boat
The easiest way to travel from Pakse to Don Det is by booking a combined bus-and-boat ticket. The total journey takes around 2 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours, and tickets cost about 234,000 LAK ($10.70).
These buses cater more to tourists and are air-conditioned, making them a lot more comfortable than local buses.
Airbus and Chanthachone Transportation are some of the companies offering combined bus-and-boat trips to Don Det from Pakse.
Departure and arrival stations
Most buses depart from Chipatsong Bus Station in Pakse city centre.
You will be dropped off at Nakasong Ferry Boat Station, where you will take a scenic boat ride to Don Det Ferry Station.

Departure and arrival stations
Minivan companies use different departure points. Some leave from their own offices, while others depart from Chipatsong Bus Terminal. A few even offer free hotel pickup, so it’s worth checking with your provider in advance to find the most convenient option.
The minivan will take you straight to Nakasong Ferry Pier. From here, it’s a 20-minute boat ride to Don Det Port.
Your minivan company will take care of both your van and boat transfers.

Pakse to Don Det by Local Bus + Boat
Looking for a more local (and cheaper) experience? Instead of a tourist bus, you can take a local bus and boat from Pakse to Don Det.
In Pakse, local buses are basically big songthaews — no air-conditioning, slower than tourist buses, and often packed to capacity. Even the floor space is usually taken.
With this option, you will take a local bus from Pakse to Nakasong and then transfer to a boat to Don Det.
Combined fares start at 130,000 LAK ($5.90), and the travel time is around 3 hours 50 minutes.
Step 1: Local Bus from Pakse to Nakasong
Prepare for a cramped ride from Pakse to Nakasong. A typical Lao transport, local buses have open windows and are usually crowded with locals travelling with goods.
A ticket costs 100,000 LAK ($4.60). Travel time is 3h 30m, which can be quite uncomfortable on a packed songthaew.
You can catch a local bus from Pakse’s Southern Bus Terminal, also known as 8KM Bus Terminal. This bus station is 8 km east from the city centre, hence, the name.
You will be dropped off at Nakasang Bus Station. From here, you’ll need to walk about 500 m to Nakasong Ferry Terminal.
Step 2: Boat from Nakasong to Don Det
Most boats from Nakasong to Don Det sail between morning and noon, so it’s best to plan your trip earlier in the day. By mid-afternoon, departures become less frequent.
The ticket price is fixed at 30,000 LAK ($1.40) per person for the boat ride that takes around 20 minutes.
Keep in mind that boats usually need at least two passengers before they set off. Alternatively, you can hire a private boat for around 150,000 LAK ($6.90).

You can also rent bicycles nearby to further explore the island. Set in a quiet area, you are guaranteed a peaceful sleep here.
