Hanoi is Vietnam's capital, and the Old Quarter is its beating heart. Narrow streets there run on street food, motorbikes and pavement beer stools. The train is the cheapest way to get from Sapa to Hanoi, at $11 (280,000 VND). The ride takes 6h 51m - 9h 5m, though. The bus and the minivan both cut the journey shorter and cost a bit more. A private transfer is the comfortable, costly pick.

1Hi KM, Thanks a lot for sharing your view! Of course everyone has their own opinion and some people will prefer the bus, others the train. That's why we provide you with all the options. I also reconsidered our recommendation and think you raised a very good point. If you travel by train, you'll need to leave Sa Pa around 6pm and will arrive in the early morning in Hanoi. When you take the latest bus, you can leave Sapa between 14:00-16:00 and arrive around 20:00-22:00 in Hanoi. It's not that much time difference, but if you still want to explore Sapa on the last day, travelling by train gives you more time in the afternoon. If you are coming back from a trekking on the last day, or still want to make a day trekking (that's what we did ourselves), you'll have a bit more time left when taking the train. Especially when you decide to stay only stay 1 night in SaPa (night train - one night sapa - night train back), it is nice to have some extra time in the afternoon as you will have almost 2 full days. Another reason why I think it is easier to take the night train back to Hanoi, is because you can directly make your transfer to Cat Ba (geckoroutes.com), Ninh Binh (geckoroutes.com) or any other destination you are visiting next. This saves you the hassle of taking a taxi to your hotel, checking in for one night, checking out again and taking the taxi to the railway or bus station. If you stayed several nights in Sapa and will stay a few nights in Hanoi after you return from Sapa, then the bus looks like a better option indeed. Again, it's all personal preferences and I really appreciate you took the time to share your view! If you still have anything to add in response, please don't hesitate to do so! Safe travels! Maarten
