When travelling from Battambang to Sihanoukville, you have 3 options: you can take a bus for 11.5 hours; a taxi for 10-12 hours; or a plane for 4.5 hours, including transfers. Rates range between $23 and $135.
Sitting in a bus or van for more than 11 hours is quite long. That’s why we recommend splitting the journey in Siem Reap or Phnom Penh. If you still want to travel by bus than you can choose from 3 bus companies.
The taxi is another option if you are keen on making a direct trip. You can order more spacious taxis for an even cheaper price if you book online instead of hailing one on the streets.
Taking the plane is a lot faster, but you will first have to travel to Siem Reap since Battambang doesn’t have its own airport.
It is quite a long journey from Battambang to Sihanoukville since the bus has to go all the way east via Phnom Penh. If you have already seen Phnom Penh, you can choose from 3 bus companies to travel this distance in one leg.
There are only a few companies operating on this route like Mekong Express, Virak Buntham and Phnom Penh Sorya. We recommend booking with Mekong Express as this company receives good reviews in Cambodia, while Virak Buntham does not have a great reputation.
Bear in mind that sitting in a van for more than 11 hours is not a great experience. Virak Buntham also offers a night bus from Battambang to Sihanoukville, which allows you to not waste a lot of travel time as you can sleep during the ride. However, travelling by night is less safe and again, Virak Buntham doesn’t receive the best reviews.
If you wish to book with Mekong Express, you need to go to BookMeBus.
We highly recommend Mekong Express as it generally receives good reviews and is very safe.
Departure next to Phsar Nat supermarket in the city center
Arrival near the Phsar Leu Market, which is still a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride to the center of Sihanoukville
Buses of Virak Buntham are a few hours faster, but we prefer Mekong Express as we choose safety first.
Departure from Virak Buntham Battambang office, just one block away from Boeung Chhouk Market
Arrival at Virak Buntham Express Travel & Tours office, next to the Sihanoukville bus terminal, which is a 10-15 min tuk-tuk or taxi ride to the center
Phnom Penh Sorya
Phnom Penh Sorya does not generally have a good reputation but they offer cheaper trips for the route from Battambang to Sihanoukville so you can also consider booking with them.
Departure from Street 106, opposite of the Family Cafe
Arrival at Phnom Penh Sorya Office along Independent Street
Battambang to Sihanoukville by Taxi
Duration: 10 – 12 hours Cost: $135
Ordering a taxi from your hotel or hailing one on the street will probably cost around $140 if you are not able to negotiate with the driver. However, booking one online will cost you a standard rate of $135.
Another advantage of booking online is that you get an SUV type taxi. These taxis provide more space compared to the 4-seater sedan taxis you sometimes see on the streets.
Battambang does not have its own airport. This means you have to travel first to the nearest airport which you can find in Siem Reap.
Step 1: Battambang to Siem Reap Airport by Minibus/Taxi
Duration: 3 hours Cost: $8 or $40 – $55
There are two ways you can travel from Battambang to Siem Reap Airport: you can either take the minibus or the taxi.
Note that there are normally 2 direct flights from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville in the morning and another one at night, but more flights are offered on weekends. Make sure to align your transfers accordingly so you don’t end up missing your plane.
By Minibus to Siem Reap Airport
There are 2 minibus schedules for Mekong Express. One van leaves at 8:00 and the other at 14:00. A ticket costs $8 and the ride takes about 3 hours.
This passes by the Siem Reap Airport before entering the city center. But note that the minibus doesn’t automatically make a stop at the airport.
If you kindly ask the bus driver he might be willing to drop you off at a safe spot near the airport. If the bus driver is in a good mood, then you wouldn’t have to go all the way to the city center before going back to the airport.
If this is not possible, you can take a taxi or a tuk-tuk to the airport. This would cost around $10. See our post on Siem Reap International Airport for more info.
