When travelling the 230km distance from Bangkok to Koh Lanta, you have 3 options: you can take a short flight & van trip for 4 hours ($32), the bus for 14 hours ($28), or the train for 22 hours ($46).
How to get from Bangkok to Koh Lanta?
The quickest way is to take a flight from Bangkok to Koh Lanta via Krabi airport. The flight to Krabi takes only 1 hour and 30 minutes and the van & ferry to Koh Lanta takes 2-3 hours. Flights to Koh Lanta already start from ฿600 ($20) and van & ferry costs around ฿400 ($13).
There are many travel companies at the airport offering van transfers from the airport to Koh Lanta. These transfers depart as early as 07:00 until 15:00 with prices starting at 400 THB ($13.50) per person.
The van will drive onto the ferry and bring you to Koh Lanta within 2-3 hours. The exact travel time is unpredictable as it depends on the length of the queue at Hua Hin Pier.
If you want to secure your transfer beforehand, you can also book your van ride online. Krabi Airport Shuttle offers van transfers to Koh Lanta for 500 THB ($16.50). This already includes a free drop-off to your hotel in the island.

Don’t want to fly? You can also travel by bus. First, take a bus heading to Krabi. From there, you hop on a van going to the beautiful island of Koh Lanta.
Step 1: Bangkok to Krabi by Bus
Duration: 12 hours Cost: 680 THB ($22.50)
We recommend booking a bus with Lignite Tours, which offers 4 night time trips daily. The buses depart from the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok and arrive at the Krabi Bus Terminal. The journey takes 12.5 hours.
Since it takes half a day to travel from Bangkok to Krabi by bus, we suggest booking a night bus. This way, you can catch up on some sleep so you’re ready to enjoy the island life upon arrival!

Travelling by train from Bangkok to Koh Lanta can be a great adventure if you have the time to spend and want to take in the sights.
However, this option will take nearly 24 hours. So if you are short on time or eager to get to the island, we wouldn’t advise you to travel by train.
Step 1: Bangkok to Surat Thani by Train
Duration: 15.5 hours Cost: 850 THB ($28)
The nearest train station to Koh Lanta is in Surat Thani. This means you have to book a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani. You can book a second class sleeper berth on train #85 or train #167 so you don’t lose a day travelling. These trains depart from Hua Lamphong Railway Station at 19:30 and 18:30 and travel through the night.
There is only one bus per day from the train station in Surat Thani to Koh Lanta, it is operated by Phantip. Be sure to book your ticket in advance! Also, note that the bus leaves at 08:00, which means you may be rushing from the train to board your bus.
The bus will travel to Krabi first. From there, you will board a van to Koh Lanta. The journey takes about 6.5 hours and you can expect to pay 550 THB ($18) for this leg of the journey.
