When travelling the 230km distance from Bangkok to Koh Lanta, you have 3 options: you can take a short flight & van trip for 4 hours ($32), the bus for 14 hours ($28), or the train for 22 hours ($46).

 

How To Get From Bangkok to Koh Lanta?

The quickest way is to take a flight from Bangkok to Koh Lanta via Krabi airport. The flight to Krabi takes only 1 hour and 30 minutes and the van & ferry to Koh Lanta takes 2-3 hours. Flights to Koh Lanta already start from  ฿600 ($20) and van & ferry costs around ฿400 ($13).

Alternatively, you can also take the bus which costs less than 10 dollars, but takes approx 12 hours to Krabi, excluding the ferry trip to Koh Lanta.

Last, you can take the train to Surat Thani and then continue by van to Koh Lanta. However, this will a very long journey of at least 22 hours.

Bangkok to Koh Lanta by Flight

Koh Lanta doesn’t have its own airport. Krabi Airport is the nearest, so we recommend booking a flight to Krabi, where you can take a van to Koh Lanta.

Step 1: Bangkok to Krabi by Flight

Duration: 1.5 hours
Costs: 570 THB ($19)

There are many flights going to Krabi from Bangkok daily. Low-cost carriers such as Air Asia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air offer flights departing from Don Muang Airport (DMK).

The cost of a one-way ticket starts at 570 THB ($19). As Krabi is a popular tourist destination, there are often many promotions, although these prices can triple during the peak season.

Step 2: Krabi to Koh Lanta by Van

Duration: 2-3 hours
Costs: 400 THB ($13.50)

There are many travel companies at the airport offering van transfers from the airport to Koh Lanta.  These transfers depart as early as 07:00 until 15:00 with prices starting at 400 THB ($13.50) per person.

The van will drive onto the ferry and bring you to Koh Lanta within 2-3 hours. The exact travel time is unpredictable as it depends on the length of the queue at Hua Hin Pier.

If you want to secure your transfer beforehand, you can also book your van ride online. Krabi Airport Shuttle offers van transfers to Koh Lanta for 500 THB ($16.50). This already includes a free drop-off to your hotel in the island.

Bangkok to Koh Lanta by Bus


Duration: 14 hours excl. transfer time
Costs: 930 THB ($31)

Don’t want to fly? You can also travel by bus. First, take a bus heading to Krabi. From there, you hop on a van going to the beautiful island of Koh Lanta.

Step 1: Bangkok to Krabi by Bus

Duration: 12 hours
Costs: 680 THB ($22.50)

We recommend booking a bus with Lignite Tours, which offers 4 night time trips daily. The buses depart from the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok and arrive at the Krabi Bus Terminal. The journey takes 12.5 hours.

Since it takes half a day to travel from Bangkok to Krabi by bus, we suggest booking a night bus. This way, you can catch up on some sleep so you’re ready to enjoy the island life upon arrival!

Step 2: Krabi to Koh Lanta by Van

Duration: 2-3 hours
Costs: 250 THB ($8.20)

Vans depart from the bus terminal in Krabi every hour from 07:00 to 17:00. The journey to Koh Lanta takes about 2-3 hours and tickets can be purchased at the bus terminal upon your arrival.

Online booking is also available for 360 THB ($12). It’s a bit more expensive, but this can be very helpful during peak season.

Bangkok to Koh Lanta by Combined Bus and Ferry

Duration: 18.5 hours excl. transfer time
Costs: 1,250 THB ($41.50)

Paradive Travel also provides a combined bus and ferry ticket. The bus leaves at 19:00 from Bangkok and the journey takes about 18.5 hours to reach Koh Lanta.

Train

Bangkok to Koh Lanta by Train


Duration: 22 hours excl. transfer time 
Costs: 1,400 THB ($46)

Travelling by train from Bangkok to Koh Lanta can be a great adventure if you have the time to spend and want to take in the sights.

However, this option will take nearly 24 hours. So if you are short on time or eager to get to the island, we wouldn’t advise you to travel by train.

Step 1: Bangkok to Surat Thani by Train

Duration: 15.5 hours
Costs: 850 THB ($28)

The nearest train station to Koh Lanta is in Surat Thani. This means you have to book a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani. You can book a second class sleeper berth on train #85 or train #167 so you don’t lose a day travelling. These trains depart from Hua Lamphong Railway Station at 19:30 and 18:30 and travel through the night.

Step 2: Surat Thani to Koh Lanta by Bus

Duration: 6.5 hours
Costs: 550 THB ($18)

There is only one bus per day from the train station in Surat Thani to Koh Lanta, it is operated by Phantip. Be sure to book your ticket in advance! Also, note that the bus leaves at 08:00, which means you may be rushing from the train to board your bus.

The bus will travel to Krabi first. From there, you will board a van to Koh Lanta. The journey takes about 6.5 hours and you can expect to pay 550 THB ($18) for this leg of the journey.
