Why visit San Jose?
San Jose is a bustling urban landscape in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. Being the capital city, it may not be as pretty as the beach and jungle destinations that the country is known for. But if you are stopping by anyway, might as well explore for a few hours or a day before moving on to your next stop.
You will find plenty of things to do in San Jose. Within the city, you can check out the colonial buildings turned museums at Barrio Amon, try out the famed restaurants at Barrio Escalante, or party the night away in El Pueblo. If you want to venture outside the city limits, the Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens are highly recommended!

Monteverde to San Jose by Bus
The bus is the cheapest option to get from Monteverde to San Jose, with tickets costing 3,890 CRC ($8.30). This makes it a popular choice for locals and backpackers.
But here’s the catch: buses make a lot of stops to pick up and drop off passengers, so the trip can take 4 hours or even longer. Plus, buses in Costa Rica are prone to petty thieves!
Still, the price is unbeatable. And if you’re on a budget, you will want to be on one of the two daily bus trips to San Jose from Monteverde. Operated by TransMonteverde, these buses leave at 05:30 and 14:30 every day.
Departure and arrival station
Buses depart from the Commercial Centre in Santa Elena, the gateway to Monteverde.
The arrival station is at Terminal Atlantico Norte in San Jose city centre.
Attention: Terminal 7-10 closed in April 2025. Transmonteverde used to arrive at San José’s Terminal 7-10. This was the main hub for buses from Cóbano, Monteverde, San Carlos, Jacó, and even international routes from Nicaragua and El Salvador.
Bus schedule from Monteverde to San Jose
With only two buses a day, we recommend booking online in advance to secure your seat. You can buy tickets on the Transmonteverde website for 3,890 CRC ($8.30) (plus a booking fee). It’s not always reliable for foreigners, though.
If you’re unable to access the Transmonteverde website, BookAway is an alternative option. Ticket prices for the same Transmonteverde bus are more expensive here at 8,200 CRC ($17.50). That’s still much cheaper than a minivan, though!
PRO TIP: Do be mindful of your luggage if you travel by bus! Bigger ones will be stored in the compartment below. Make sure they’re inside before boarding the bus and don’t forget to get your luggage ticket. As for smaller bags with your valuables, they’re safer in front of you (between your legs) than on the overhead bin.
