Here, you’ll find one of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia — Zlatni Rat Beach (Golden Horn) — a unique spit of land surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise waters. Also famous in Brac is its world-class olive oil. Over a million olive trees are on the island, and Brac is Croatia’s largest olive plantation!
What are the 3 ways to travel from Hvar to Brac?
There are 3 ways to travel the 20 kilometre (12 miles) distance from Hvar to Brac. You can choose between the ferry, ferry via Jelsa and ferry via Milna. The journey takes 45 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes and the quickest way is by ferry. If you're on a budget, the cheapest option is by ferry via Jelsa with tickets starting at €12.50 ($14.40).

Hvar to Brac by Ferry
A direct ferry is the easiest and most convenient way to travel from Hvar to Brac. Jadrolinija sails once per day on this route during the tourist season from June to September.
The best thing about this option is that the ferry takes you from Hvar Town centre straight to Bol on the island’s south coast. Bol is Brac’s most famous tourist spot because of Zlatni Rat Beach, so there’s a high chance you’ll stay here.
A ticket costs €26.50 ($30.50) for the ferry ride that lasts for 45 minutes.
Departure and arrival stations
The ferry departs from Hvar Harbour, in the southern part of the town centre.
You’ll arrive at Bol Port on the south coast of the island. From here, you can easily find accommodations in the town centre.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Jadrolinija is a popular ferry company and often gets fully booked. Buying a ticket online does not guarantee a trip at your preferred time. Jadrolinija operates on a first-come, first-served basis. So even with an online ticket, if the ferry you booked is already full, you may need to queue for hours at the port for a seat.
Hvar to Brac by Ferry via Jelsa
If you’re travelling during the low season (October to May), your only option to reach Brac is a ferry from Jelsa, another town on Hvar Island.
Ferries from Jelsa to Brac operate all year round.
Step 1: Hvar to Jelsa by Bus or Taxi
If you’re staying in Hvar Town, you’ll first have to get to Jelsa Harbour, which is 30 km away.
Buses to Jelsa are available at Hvar Town Bus Stop. The ride takes 25m and costs €5.50 ($6.30). You will be dropped off at Jelsa Bus Stop. From here, it is a 10-minute walk to Jelsa Harbour.
Buses from Hvar to Jelsa are available about every two hours from 06:55 to 22:55.
For this route, online booking for the bus is not available. You can buy your tickets at the bus station.
One important thing: if you’re taking the Jadrolinija ferry from Jelsa to Brac, you won’t be able to take the bus. This ferry departs early in the morning. In this case, your only option to get from Hvar to Jelsa is a taxi. The ride takes 30 minutes, but it is significantly more expensive, with rates starting from €60 ($69).
Step 2: Jelsa to Brac by Ferry
Jadrolinija operates all year round and offers one daily trip from Jelsa to Brac, usually departing in the early morning. Krilo Shipping Company, on the other hand, runs an afternoon departure but is only available during the summer.

The journey takes 20-30m, and a ticket costs €7 ($8.10).

Hvar to Brac by Ferry via Milna
Planning to visit other towns on Brac besides Bol? You can also reach the island via Milna, a charming fishing village on Brac’s southwest coast. Milna is often said to have the most beautiful harbour on Brac.
That said, we’d only recommend this route if Milna is part of your itinerary. Otherwise, you would be taking a more complicated route that takes 2-3 hours when you can reach Bol directly in just 50 minutes.
Ferries from Hvar to Brac via Milna run only during the high season (April to October), mainly to serve tourists.
Step 1: Hvar to Milna, Brac by Ferry
No matter where you stay in Hvar Town, you shouldn’t be too far from the port. From there, you can catch a ferry to Milna between April and October.
A ticket costs €14.80 ($17) for the journey to Milna, and the trip is expected to be 30-45m long. You can book your ticket in advance through BookAway.
Step 2: Milna to Supetar by Bus
Once you’ve had your fill of Milna, you can start exploring other towns on the island.
Is Bol your next destination? Sadly, there are still no direct buses operating from Milna to Bol. You’ll first need to get to the island’s capital, Supetar, 20 km northeast of Milna.
Arriva offers several bus departures from Milna to Supetar daily. Travel time is 30-40m, and bus tickets cost €4.20 ($4.90).
Step 3: Supetar to Bol by Bus
Supetar is Brac’s largest and most developed town. Yet, it still boasts a beautiful culture and heritage that is worth exploring, even for a few hours.
From Supetar, you can take a bus to Bol that takes around 50m - 1h 20m. A bus ticket costs €6.50 ($7.50).

Alternative option: Milna to Bol by Taxi
You can avoid the hassle of bus transfers by taking a taxi directly from Milna to Bol. It’s more expensive, with rates starting from €60 ($69). But the taxi ride takes only 1 hour.
If you want to stick to public transport, you can stay overnight in Milna and take the early morning bus trips to Supetar and Bol the next day.
Best places to stay in Brac
Important: Tourism in Croatia is very seasonal. Much of the available accommodation in Croatia is fully booked in the summer, but many sites are closed in the winter months. With July and August being the peak season, rates can rise 3 times as high as compared the low season or shoulder months. We recommend booking your accommodation at least 1 month in advance to lock in better rates.
Before you start reading about our favourite places to stay in Brac, we want to make you aware of the different locations to stay on Brac Island.
- Bol is by far our favourite. It’s a charming port town with lots of watersport activities and outstanding restaurants. This is also where you find the famous Zlatni Rat beach
- Supetar is where most ferries dock. Not as interesting as Bol, but you can find some good value accommodations here. In Supetar, you’ll also find some great hidden beaches to explore.
- Milna is a traditional fishing town which is nice to visit, but we definitely prefer to stay in Bol or Supetar on Brac Island.
Villa Ana - Budget Friendly
At Villa Ana you’ll be just under 250 meters from the beach in Bol. You’ll even be able to see the sea from your own private balcony. If you can’t wait to cool down, then you can just take a dip in the villa’s outdoor swimming pool.
The hosts are beyond helpful and go out of their way to ensure you have the best stay possible. The villa even provides home-made wines, olive oil, prosecco and brandy.

Villa Medea - Budget Friendly
If you want to stay in Supetar (the northern part of the island), Villa Midea offers the best value for money. Although the hotel is located just 5 minutes from the beach, you don’t even need to leave the hotel to enjoy a dip in the water as the hotel has its own pool!
The villa offers the feel of a small-scale hotel, with apartments on offer for up to 4 adults. Every room has everything you’ll need, a comfy bed, seating area and even a kitchenette with a coffee machine. Don’t fancy cooking? The hotel offers an exceptional breakfast to start the day right.
