How to get from Hoi An to Nha Trang

Why visit Nha Trang?

Nha Trang is a high-rise resort town in southeast Vietnam. Its sandy coast is regarded as one of the most beautiful bays in the world — thanks to its crescent-shaped white sand beach and clear turquoise waters.

Also known as the country’s seafood capital, Nha Trang is bustling with many offerings — from dining choices to pagodas and sculpture gardens as well as a vibrant nightlife. But if those are not enough, you can always visit the many islands nearby via boat or by cable car from Nha Trang.

There are 4 ways to travel the 510 kilometres (317 miles) from Hoi An to Nha Trang. You can choose between the bus, private transfer, train and flight. The journey takes 3 hours 30 minutes to 16 hours 30 minutes and the quickest way is by flight. If you're on a budget, the cheapest option is by bus with tickets starting at 414,000 VND ($15.80).

There are two ways to travel from Hoi An to Nha Trang by bus:

• Direct bus from Hoi An to Nha Trang
• Indirect route via Da Nang

On a budget? Travelling by bus from Hoi An to Nha Trang costs 414,000 VND ($15.80). All buses operate overnight, which means you can save on hotel costs.

Travelling at night doesn’t mean that you will get a good night’s sleep, though. Most of the bus operators for this route don’t get the best reviews.

Bus options from Hoi An to Nha Trang

If direct buses from Hoi An to Nha Trang are unavailable, you can take a taxi from Hoi An to Da Nang, and then take a bus from Da Nang to Nha Trang.

The most convenient way to get from Hoi An to Da Nang Bus Station is by taxi. Rates start from 440,000 VND ($16.80). You can pre-book your private transfer through BookAway — their cars are generally more comfortable than regular taxis.

Another option is to take a motorbike taxi for around 150,000 VND ($5.70), but only if you’re travelling light.

IMPORTANT: The cheap local buses that used to operate on this route were no longer available the last time we checked (November 2024). Some touts are taking advantage of this situation by luring tourists to take overpriced taxis, which is why it’s best to book your private transfer with a trusted company beforehand.

From Da Nang Central Bus Station, there are a few buses departing in the afternoon/evening for Nha Trang.

We recommend travelling with Futa Bus because it has the most convenient departure and arrival times. It offers the cheapest fares at 398,000 VND ($15.20) and also gets decent reviews for this route.

It’s worth noting that bus travel in Vietnam is neither as safe nor as comfortable as taking the train. And this is a long journey that takes 10h - 15h 30m.

Hoi An does not have its own railway station. When travelling by train from Hoi An to Nha Trang, you will first take a bus or taxi to Da Nang Railway Station.

Despite this extra transfer, the train is a good option if you choose to travel overnight.

From Hoi An, you can take a 1 hour minivan to Da Nang Railway Station for around 155,000 VND ($5.90).

Minivans are available from 06:00 to 20:00 daily. This means that even if you take the last minivan trip, you will arrive 2 hours early when taking the night train to Nha Trang. You can use this time to have dinner or light snacks at one of the cafes near the train station.

Alternatively, you can take a taxi with rates from 440,000 VND ($16.80). Minivans and private transfers are available for online booking on BookAway.

IMPORTANT: Public Bus #1 used to be a cheap way to get from Hoi An Da Nang. But the last time we checked (November 2024), these were no longer in operation.

From Da Nang, there are 5 trains going to Nha Trang every day. Only one of these is a night train, though. We highly recommend that you take an overnight train so that you don’t lose an entire day on the journey.

You can get a second-class seat for around 655,000 VND ($25). But for this long journey, we recommend booking a 4-sleeper cabin for more comfort.

A cheaper alternative would be to get a bunk in a 6-berth cabin, but it is less spacious and may not be as comfortable.

The train and the bus are good options if you don’t mind travelling overnight. But if you’d rather travel during the day or if you’re short on time, there is also an option to take a flight from Hoi An to Nha Trang.

There are not a lot of flights available, though, just 1 or 2 flights operate daily.

Also, note that the nearest airport to Hoi An is in Da Nang, and the nearest airport to Nha Trang is in Cam Ranh. Both airports are 1 hour away.

From Hoi An centre to Da Nang Airport takes 1 hour by shuttle bus or taxi.

We recommend taking a shuttle bus if you’re travelling solo. This will pick you up from Hoi An centre and take you to Da Nang Airport for 155,000 VND ($5.90).

If you’re with at least one companion, it will be more cost-efficient to take a taxi. Fares going to Da Nang Airport start from 320,000 VND ($12.20).

From Da Nang, you will then fly to the nearest airport to Nha Trang, which is Cam Ranh Airport.

Vietjet Air offers the cheapest fares, but it’s only available on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Vietnam Airlines operates on this route every day, but it’s a bit more expensive.

Airfares start from 830,000 VND ($31.50) and travel time is around 1.5 hours.

From Cam Ranh Airport, you will find Nha Trang 40 km north. You can get there in 2 ways: a 1 hour bus and a 45-minute taxi.

The bus is the cheaper option at 74,000 VND ($2.80). Dat Moi Bus #18 will take you from the airport to 10 Yersin Street in Nha Trang city centre.

Note that the bus does not have a lot of space for luggage. If you’re carrying bulky bags, it might be more convenient to take a taxi. Rates start from 226,000 VND ($8.60).

The only way you can travel directly from Hoi An to Nha Trang is by private transfer. The journey takes about 9 hours 10 minutes hours, making it faster than taking a bus or a train.
